What does a Vermont beekeeper do in Winter? A good question, since in other parts of the country the beekeeping season doesn't end in Autumn. Here in Vermont; however, the bees hunker down with the onset of 30 degree weather and snow. This means that a beekeeper has some extra time on their hands, if they're not too busy freezing or shoveling out snow. For Scott and I, it's a time to get a little fun in, that may have escaped us during the summer months because we were too busy with our daytime jobs, and sideline beekeeping business.
It was a crystal clear, sunny day. The air was crisp--in the low 20's, and there was a blanket of fluffy snow to make our trek joyful. Days like these are precious, and if you've never sweated in twenty degree weather, then you best get yourself to Vermont in the Winter and start snowshoeing! You'll never want the day to end.
And if you can't stand the heat that your body is putting out, you can always take a barefoot splash in the river, as our son did!
Here's to all that 2011 has in store for you -- Happy New Year!
